For the first time in its five-year history, the world’s most important one-on-one B-Boy competition, Red Bull BC One, will take place on the streets where Hip-Hop began –New York City, USA.  The famed Hammerstein Ballroom will host the highly anticipated battle where sixteen of the globe’s best dancers will compete head-to-head to determine who will be the ONE crowned Red Bull BC One 2009 Champion.

B-Boying which is often referred to as “break dancing” or “breaking,” started during the late 1970s in the Bronx, NY and is a foundational element of Hip Hop culture along with DJing, MCing and Graffiti art.  The term “B-Boy” or “B-Boying” which refers to the dance, moves and lifestyle originated in New York and was coined by Kool Herc who was one of the pioneering Hip Hop DJs throwing jams in the Bronx.  Today, an evolving and well connected B-Boy and B-Girl scene thrives around the world.  South Korea, France and the USA boast some of the most vibrant and talented dancers on the planet.

Each Red Bull BC One competitor is hand-picked by an international team of experts.  Being chosen to compete in this prestigious competition is not just about dance skills but also reputation, character and influence in the dance community.  Innovative dancers who have earned the coveted Red Bull BC One title include last year’s champion, Wing from South Korea; and 2007 winner Ronnie from the USA who is also a member of Super Cr3w (MTV’s Americas Best Dance Crew champions).  Korean B-Boy Hong 10’s gravity defying moves earned him the 2006 crown.  In 2005, the original and confident style of French B-Boy Lilou wowed the crowd and judges awarding him the championship title.

The first Red Bull BC One was hosted in Biel, Switzerland in 2004.  The competition moved to Berlin Germany in 2005; Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2006; Johannesburg, South Africa in 2007; and Paris, France in 2008.  This year, the world’s best dancers will compete in New York City – the Hip Hop capital of the world.  There is no place on earth with more history or relevance in B-Boy/ B-Girl culture than New York City.  This November, Red Bull BC One will take place within the walls of the famed Hammerstein Ballroom in the heart of mid-town Manhattan.  The space will be transformed into the ultimate B-Boy battleground for the one-night-only competition.
